It could be any unit: cm, m, inch ...
It does not matter. (If you understand the physics behind it , you will know why it does not matter.)

This is a great applet, the only things I would suggest are giving it units of measure. Particularly Diameter of the Lens, the lens SAG heights which would in turn tie into total Thickness of the Lens, and distance of the Focal Point. A very, very good applet for helping visualize what is going on though.

When you take a narrow bunch of rays you obtain a focus. If not you can see another interesting thing - a caustic. The applet gives a great explanation of the figures made by light on the bottom of shiny (e.g. metal) mugs owing to reflection and outside a glass of water owing to refraction. I dream about such an applet generating caustics in 3D for lenses and bottles when a bunch of sun rays falls at different angles on the objects.

can u show me how to use the simulation to adjust the thickness of the lens to see how it affect the focal length of the lens? whenever i try to change the width the left and right curvature keeps auto adjust. hence i can never keep the variable constant. thx
