There is a new advanced version: vernier cliper (inch/mm mode, dial mode, measure inner/outer diameter and depth) 2010 Jan. 17 updated.

This java applet shows you how to read the vernier scale on Vernier calipers.
To observe how the scales are read, click in the "checkbox" by SHOW and drag the lower scale left or right to observe how the measurement is determined.
Notice that the value for the upper scale is determined by where the 0 on the lower scale lines up with the upper scale and the number on the lower scale is determined by finding which mark on the lower scale best lines up with ANY mark on the upper scale.
To test your ability to read a measurement, leave SHOW unchecked and then drag the lower scale left or right.

The applet will wait for you to enter a value into the TextField and will then tell you whether your answer is correct.(After you type in an answer, press Enter.)
Thanks goes to Mary Ball for rewording the instructions.

This is another applet to help you understand how it works.
You can drag the lower box or use the slider to see the gap between those boxes at different level.
It is the gap which give us higher precission!

I would like to commend you on a wonderful site. The Vernier site is informative and
fun. I wanted to get your permission to link to your Vernier from a Cumberland County
Educational Physics course website. It was suggested to us that we get permission to
link to any sites so that we don't infringe on any copyright laws. I appreciate your hard
work.. You can respond to cmclean@webacademy.net
Thank -You for your time.

Dear Dr. Hwang,
I have used some of your physics applets and I find them to be excellent.
Well done! At the moment in the Physics Department we are making changes to
our first year physics labs and would like to include your Vernier applet
in one of the labs in order to help the students learn to read a vernier
scale properly. Is is OK if we include the applet in one experiment?
Thanking you in advance,

Yours Sincerely,

Hi Assoc. Prof. Fu-Kwun Hwang,

i am a Physics teacher from Singapore. I started using your applets in a Junior College and find them interesting and helpful for my students to visualise Physics concepts.
presently i'm teaching in a secondary school. i've set up a site at www.angjl.per.sg/Deyi.htm and i would like to have your permission to include links to applets in your site - begining with Vernier and Vector Addition.

thanks and best regards Smiley

Gentlemen:

Many thanks for your very helpful site describing the method of reading the
Vernier caliper.

I recently purchased a Starrett Vernier caliper on Ebay which is in
excellent condition and
although I thought I knew how to "read" the instrument I was not certain.
Your site was a
great help in assisting me to confirm what I already thought was the correct
method.

Many thanks to you and Mary Ball for the clear and concise instructions.

Sincerely,

Taylor Mullaly

Dear Mr. Hwang,

I have found your Vernier caliper program very useful for checking machine operator knowledge of use the caliper. Also we've organized a measurement training for our production personnel in which we had used the program to check their skills. Thank you very much for your efforts in spreading the physics all over the world!

Kind regards

Dear Mr Fu-Kwun Hwang,
Thank you for allowing me to use the vernier applet off-line. This and some of your other items are very helpful in teaching me to use the equipment, I will let others who are interested in physics to view your site and enjoy playing with the tools.

I have created an applet for micrometer, and I hope it is what you want. Because you did not describe it in detail.
Any suggestion for improvement will be highly appreciated!

The scale on Vernier calipers (or micrometer) was designed in a way that it is easy to read the value.
This applet was design to help you read the value. I am sorry that you did not understand it.

Use the following snap shot image of the applet as an example.

1. You will find 0. pass the 9.0 mm line so the distance is more than 9.0 mm
2. Find the line which is aligned for both rulers. Read the number from the moving ruler, which correspond to .7 mm
3. Add those two together, so you have 9.7 mm.

Is it simple enough. It is similar for the micro-meter. Use the above image as an example:
You will find the distance is more than 5.5 mm and you will find .28mm from the rotating part.
So the final result is 5.5mm+0.28mm=5.78mm
