if you are given a fuction of x=Acos(kx + wt), how can you tell whether the wave is longitudinal or transverse?

kx+wt so the wave move in x direction

x=Acos(kx+wt)
What is the meaning of the first x in the above statement.
If it is the displacement of the wave, then what is the direction of the displacement?

You should be able to find out whether the wave is longitudinal or transverse,
if you have answer to the above definition for your problem.
