This java applet shows the "Superposition Principle of wave"
When two or more wave moving through the same region of space,
waves will superimpose and produce a well defined combined effect.
Wave maintain their integrity upon overlapping (without themselves being permanently changed).

Blue colored wave + green colored wave ==> red colored wave
Blue wave moving toward right, (with fixed frequency f)
Press the -/+ button: change the direction of green wave.
two waves with same frequency and amplitude but opposite direction ==>standing wave.
What if two wave with different amplitude?

Text Field input:
Wavelength: enter wavelength £f for blue/yellow waves,

Frequency: enter frequency f for blue/yellow waves,
Wave is not necessary moves with the same speed.
We can calculate wave speed v = f*£f
Waves with two different wavelength produce beatsphenomenon. (sample GIF picture)

Change parameters with mouse
Change phase between two waves:
Move mouse near the center line, click mouse button and drag it left or right

Change amplitude for each wave
Move mouse near the highest point of wave, click mouse button and drag it up and down.

Suspend the animation: click the mouse button.

 click left mouse button The animation resumes when the mouse button is released click right mouse button The animation resumes when click mouse button again

Click mouse button twice quickly to change the time scale:
Click left mouse button: slow down by a factor of 1.5
Click right mouse button: faster by a factor of 1.5

You are welcomed to check out Suposition of Two Waves (with different phases,same amplitude,frequency) or Superposition of two waves (same frequency, different amplitude, phase/dir )

Thank you so much for the web page on the properties of waves. I work in
communications, where we use simulcast.( multiple transmitters@same freq ).
It so clearly can be used to illustrate the principles that plague us-
beating, phase nulling and phase shifting are all phenomena so easily viewed
in real time...It was great. I was searching for formulas to predict and
regulate beat rate and ran into your site, and sure am glad I did. We will
be employing offsets to our transmitters, as null durations can last ( and
corrupt/miss ) several bits at a 2Hz mismatch between transmitters. The
nulls must be regulated to work in conjunction with bit interleaving error
correction schemes, hence my searches on the subject. Again, fantastic

Your Java applet for superimposing wave is very nice,
but the "medium" has the interesting property that the group velocity and the phase velocity have opposite signs!
Well, that makes an intersting problem for the students to discuss.

Hello!
I came across your site recently and I was very impressed by your Superposition applet. It�s a very good interactive descriptive explanation of Superposition. I�ve played with it for hours!

I live in Liverpool, England and I'm in a band called Kling Klang that plays mainly instrumental synthetic music. Last year we released a single titled "The Superposition". One of the tracks on it was supposed to represent the sounds of Superposition (loads of rolling, colliding and penetrating waves). I think you might like it!

Anyway, the reason I am emailing you is to ask for your permission/help. We are releasing an album of all our previous recorded material later this year and we'd like to put it out as an Enhanced CD (Songs, Video, Data, etc). I was going to ask if we could include a copy of your web page and applet on the CD (we would obviously credit you accordingly) - would this be ok? I totally understand if you do not want us to include it, but I just thought I'd ask anyway. If you don't want us to include it, could we put a web link to it instead?

Nice page, and wonderfull java applications, can you send me more information or links, I would like to make a simulation in java for the Table Tennis Ball, as a proyectile and the efect in the movement for the spin (rotation). I'm table tennis player, usually when you put more spin in the ball, then the ball get a less distance to touch the table. For that reason in high level , the table tennis player put an strong spin in the ball, to make sure don't loss the point.

There is friction force between ball and the table.
You need to assume the friction force and calculate the torque and change angular momentum from the torque.

This is an excellent site for people who have difficulty in understanding textual physics.

i have tried to download the applet but on pushing the button it leads to a page saying "no privilege". please help in me getting the applet. also can the applet be modified to include more than two waves that is three or four.

The frequence in the above applet is very small (I also slow down the time step otherwise the change will be too fast for us to view it).
Normally we would not be able to hear sound at so low frequency.
It is only a simulation.

I need to find out the way to program it to make it more realistic.
May be you can try to do it with Audacity (which is a free audio editor).
