Title: How to use concept mapping tool for physics learning?
Post by: lookang on September 22, 2010, 04:11:00 pm
How to use concept mapping tool for physics learning?

I been using concept map tool to get students to reflect on physics as a revision tool maybe during end of year.

Is it possible to use concept map as a learning tool during tutorial?
I am wondering if there any physics researchers that use concept map to teach physics?

When is it suitable and when is it not suitable?

I think it is depends on how the concept map tool were used.
It can be used to ask to find relations between physics quantities.

You should be able to find some articles from google scholar.

Freemind is a free java tool for tree type map.

Please check out  IHMC CmapTools (http://cmap.ihmc.us) for concept map tool.

IHMC CmapTools http://cmap.ihmc.us/ for concept map tool. that is the one i was using too. ;D it is great for Explain, i used it for revision.

using the 5e or 7e instructional model (http://www.coe.ilstu.edu/scienceed/lorsbach/lcpic.jpg) i would argue that the "Explore" part is critically under develop in most physics lessons.
my experience as a teacher and learner indicate real life experiments and perhaps simulations can support the exploring.

concept map is more an "Explain" tool. after the students have "Explore" and experience the physics, then we can get them to Explain.

i realize people sometimes under estimate the critical role of "explore" or "learning by doing", and start the "Explain" stage of learning without enough emphasis on "explore".
how could the students make sense of the concept map without actually doing the physics (science) ? how would they bootstrap the learning on? on abstraction and idealization of ideas in semiotic representation such as dialogue, text and diagrams?

We learn because we interact with the world (real or virtual lab), after that, i will be more comfortable using concept maps during the Explain stage.

anyway
i am glad i am making "better" simulations for the world,  and making the world a little "better" for learning physics.
Thanks for listening to my grumbling  ;D

And image that you post about what explain.
thx

http://www.its-about-time.com/iat/5e.pdf

The 5E learning cycle model requires instruction to include the following discrete elements: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.
it is a method of instruction, or instructional model that can be very efficient to implementing lessons.

the article tells of 7e now.
The proposed 7E model expands with extra 2e —elicit and extend.

Like i understand is similarly Quality assure learning cycle but have some different,
However i think i will need read more about IHMC CmapTools to understand good.
thx prof
