Wave equation, all kind of physical oscillation problems, e.g. a string
of a violine, water waves, electro-magnetic waves...
It serves as a demonstration for a linear scalar wave equation. In x-direction (horizontal) is the string of the violin. u represents the amplitude at that position. The picture shows the swinging string. Small changes, which have a high frequency, immediately spread out and overlay the completed solution. We can observe phenomena like wave addition and canceling. Since we are solving the linear wave equation, the amplitudes have to be small. At the left end of the string is fixed (boundary condition) and right we enforce a horizontal solution.
